West Craven Turbines Ladies v Holy Cross Angels 2
The West Craven Turbines Ladies team welcomed Holy Cross Angels 2 to Marsden Heights on Friday in their second home game of the season. After the progress the Turbines have made in recent games this game was hotly anticipated to continue showing what improvements had been made. The Turbines started the game with their strongest line-up in A. Tattersall, Z. Starkie, M. Kilbride, J. Pickles and K. Watson and S. Rowland starting on the bench. Tattersall and Pickles got the home team off the mark and showed they meant business. Coach Ireton was left with a task on his hands as starting point guard Ashleigh Tattersall picked up her third foul mid way in the 1st qtr forcing her to the bench being replaced by Sarah Rowland. Pickles once again got on the score sheet with a driving baseline lay-up followed shortly by Zoe Starkie getting to the free throw line making the first. Showing they were again able to compete in the 1qtr the Turbines were down by only 7pts 7-14.
As the 2nd qtr began the Turbines showed the way managing to reduce the gap to a mere 3pts. A spate of clumsy fouls saw Katy Watson doing Tattersall in foul trouble and force her to the bench for the remainder of the half and much of the 3rd, ending the half 17-27 the Turbines were still very much in the game.
Solid defense and rebounding saw Tattersall and Starkie get on the break on more than one occasion finally playing the style of basketball the team had been searching for. As the game drew on it became apparent that the lack of bench players and the foul trouble began to hinder the team as tiredness began to show as Holy Cross went on a 10pt run in the 4th. This did not deter the home team as the continued to put the ball in the hoop with scores from Rowland and Mairead Kilbride. One of the last plays of the game saw Pickles take to the stripe in hope of recording the Turbines first ever 40pt game only to see one of them waved away for a stepping in violation ending the game 39-67 to the Angels 2.
With by far the Turbines best ever performance Starkie and Pickles had career nights with 10 and 7pts, it also saw the whole team getting on the score sheet for the first time ever. Although a close call Tattersall took the MVP for a number of aggressive moves to the basket accompanied by a number of assists and scoring 12pts. The Turbines next game sees them take to the road against Slam Dunkin Divas next Friday.
