West Craven Turbines 60 v 50 Chorley Cougars

Posted on December 14th, 2011

WC Squad – Dan Widdup, Ben Capps, Jake Dawson, Jason Rhodes, Charles Raquel, Jason R, Phil Smith, John Coates, Peter Robinson, Rob Lonsdale,

West Craven held a strong squad for their final game before Christmas in 2011 playing against Chorley Cougars. With their only win of the season coming against Chorley in the opening game of the season West Craven went into this game full off confidence of pulling off a victory. The strong squad was bolstered by the return of both John Coates and Phil Smith for this vital game.

West Craven opened with a strong starting 5 of Ben Capps, Dan Widdup, Jason Rhodes, Jake Dawson and Jason Raquel.

West Craven started strong driving into the basket and drawing fouls from the opposition with Jason Raquel going to the line 3 times within the first quarter. With coach Ireton making decisions and switching players up to ensure the team stayed fresh for the game the team played well on both offence and defensive play in the first quarter while Chorley took a narrow lead into the end of the first quarter being up by 2 at 16-14.

The Turbines carried on their excellent work into the second quarter, driving strong to the hoop again and getting their opposition in foul trouble. West Craven however despite good work didn’t manage to hold their lead and went into the half time break down by one with the scores at 25-26.

They came into the third quarter still feeling confident that the team could go on to win the game despite the narrow margin they were behind by at the break. Attacking strong to the basket WC scored 17 points in a busy third quarter where an influential Chorley player fouled out, opening the door for West Craven to attack and execute the game plan. Despite them being strong offensively, West Craven leaked points at the back and were lucky to go into the end of the third with a 2 point lead at 42-40.

With the team starting to look tired, and not pushing on offensive, occasionally with only 2 players in the opposing half, Chorley could of capitalized, however West Craven remained strong at the back and dug deep, only conceding 10 points in the final quarter which included some big 3’s from the opposition. The Turbines hit back with 18 points of their own to secure their second win of the season.

A great team performance, with good encouragement and energy from the bench and changes being made at influential times.

Coach Ireton can be happy with his squad tonight. Every player gave his 100% working well as a team both offensively and defensively. Great positivity to take into the New Year. Key Man- Jake Dawson. Strong at the hoop on both offense and defence. Top rebounding and out letting to guards accompanied by great moves under the hoop to score some good influential points scoring 6points in total.
