West Craven Turbines 44-59 Hyndburn
Posted on November 17th, 2013
West Craven Turbines vs. Hyndburn, West Craven looked to add another win to their tally against a Hyndburn team that had seen many changes through the summer. Turbines last beat Hyndburn in the previous season’s cup quarter finals in a very good performance from West Craven; however, they knew that this time the game would be much harder with Hyndburns new recruits from Ribby Hall Jets and Lancashire Police. That’s not all as Turbines main man Pete Marshall was unable to play due to work commitments. This gave rookie Roman Bradshaw the opportunity to play his first ever game for Turbines after showing recent improvements at practice. The game started with Turbines Gonzalez opening the scoring with a brilliant centre forward move to the basket followed by a few more strong moves through the Hyndburn defence. Hyndburn would reply with some very smart offences using their experience to get points and keep the game level. Some very in form shooting from the Hyndburn team put the pressure on Turbines and give Hyndburn a firm lead. With 20 seconds left of the first quarter the offence belonged to Turbines and some good passing from the team guards Smith and Ireton allowed Robinson to move on the baseline to score on the buzzer. Turbines came out into the second quarter with some good ideas that then put the pressure on Hyndburn with Gonzalez and Robinson scoring and earning fouls due to some good and smart passing from Ireton, Capps and Smith. A good luck offence was on the cards with Widdup also scoring deep twos. However, a lapse on defence would then see Hyndburn guard Chambers sink some big three’s to keep Hyndburn in the lead. Turbines kept up in the third quarter with some good moves from Gonzalez and a drive from Capps to keep West Craven in gear. The gap was then reduced to 10 and Turbines then got the chance to bring Bradshaw on for his rebounding ability towards the end of the third. Turbines had to go out into the fourth with a change of plan with the defence change to a man to man. However, Hyndburn would use intelligence to get some good baskets and draw fouls and then begin to take the game away from Turbines and any last minute fast breaks would seem a bit too late for Turbines to take the game. Final score 44-59. A 15 point loss is not really what Turbines expected and another recorded loss would prove disappointing for the team and their ambitions. However, under the circumstances Turbines put in a good performance and have collected what needs to be improved. A mention should go to Bradshaw who got his first game and with good enthusiasm for the team. MVP again goes to Gonzalez with his ability to rebound and dominance inside the key, drawing fouls and executing big moves. Top Scorers Gonzalez 15pts, Robinson 15pts, Widdup 5pts
