West Craven Turbines v Blackburn

Posted on December 18th, 2010

After last weeks defeat the Turbines had a hard game going in against Blackburn. Due to injury guard Ben Capps still out of the line-up however hopes to return in January and again the team were missing other due to availability. Therefore the Turbines were again forced to play a young and inexperienced team with only Jason Rhodes and Renko Ireton with a good deal of experience. We also saw the return of point guard Phil Smith who returns from University over the Christmas break.

The Turbines started with a 3-2 zone and began the game on defence having lost the tip. The opposition had a lot more appeared to have a lot more options and managed to get a lot of big points that set them away with a big lead.

Blackburn started with a full court press which put Turbines in a tough situation and decision making became crusial as they began to steal the ball as the young Turbines turned the ball over more times than should be mentioned making the half time score 15-55. Another bad case was that of Jason picked up an injury but hopefully it’s minor. A change of defence for the Turbines and experiment in playing a box and 1 with guard Robinson marking the opposing point guard. However there faster opposition managed to carry on scoring, eventually the Turbines managed to cope with the press with the exception of a few turn overs however it was too little too late. Delivery passes into post player “Big” Rob Lonsdale leading him to making some good moves towards the basket and also some good moves made by Dan Widdup earned him a total of 12 points and the highest scoring player for the Turbines. The opposition was far more athletic and had more options leading them to a big score of 110 points.

The overall performance wasn’t great and a lot of work needs doing for the next term. Turbines may need to work on a great deal of passing and press breaking. A variety of teams from the last few weeks has led to a wake up call and has given West Craven somethings to work on especially against the young teams. We look forward to games being played after the Christmas holidays.
