Holy Cross Angels 1 v West Craven Turbines Ladies

The West Craven Turbines Ladies team, were back in action this week after a long off-season a trip to Bury to start their second season in competitive basketball in the Manchester Area Basketball League against regaining champions Holy Cross Angels 1.

On first arrival it became apparent this was in fact their Bury Blue Devils EBL side, which left the Turbines with the exciting prospect of pitting IMG_0481themselves against a very wise and experienced side.

The Turbines stepped on the floor with a starting five of, Tattersall, Starkie, Pickles, Watson and new signing Mairead Kilbride. As the game tipped-off it was clear the Turbines were much improved and far more organized particular on the defensive end then they were last season. After finding room in the middle and a quick pass from Starkie, Pickles got the scoring underway with an inside jump shot. As the game progressed it was apparent that experience is key as Holy Cross managed to make some quality passes and distribute ball to the open play creating some easy scores. Where as the Turbines turned the ball over in the half court and although they were creating some very good shooting opportunities they were unable to find the hoop.

A positive move came from Ashleigh Tattersall making an aggressive move to the basket and getting fouled managing to get to the free-throw line for two managing make the second it was much needed score for the Turbines.

As the second half came and with Holy Cross now with a big lead there was a call from Coach Ireton increase the number of rebounds from the team. A better 3rd qtr saw Kilbride, Starkie and Pickles all getting on the score sheet. In what was a tough opening night for the Turbines the Ladies performed much better than the final score line of 78-11 suggests. J. Pickles recorded a career night of 4pts and 11 rebs and a very impressive performance on the defensive end was the teams MVP of the night. An honorable mention should be given to Sarah Rowlands who once again put in a very strong reliable performance with a good understanding of the game. With the longest road trip of the season coming up next Friday against MMU Cheshire West Craven will be looking to have learned a lot from this game.
