MMU Cheshire v West Craven Turbines Ladies
Just over a week after their first game of the season the West Craven Turbines Ladies were on the road again for their longest trip of the season to MMU Cheshire in Crewe. Hoping to show progress since the last game against Holy Cross 1 the Turbines started the game very positively indeed with Katy Watson noticing up the first points of the game. The Turbines were creating good shot opportunities throughout the 1st qtr but unfortunatly were unable to convert. A solid performance on the defensive end saw the Turbines manage to keep the score tied at 2-2 for the first 6 minutes of the game, however after MMU made some changes the home side were able to take the 1st qtr 18-2.
As the 2nd qtr began MMU soon got caught up in foul trouble and with emphasis to get to the hoop point guard Ashleigh Tattersall managed to get to the line for 2 making the first. A positive spell of play saw Mairead Kilbride hit a jumper from the free throw line, as the half came to a close a number of turn-overs from the away team had seen MMU stamp their dominance on the game with a 34-7 lead.
During the 2nd half Coach Ireton had given clear instruction to take more care of the basketball and to be more aggressive on the defensive boards, which still managed to plague the team. Being more aggressive going to the hoop saw both Watson and Tattersall going to the line although only Tattersall was able to make both ending the 3rd 59-9.
The 4th qtr didn’t start great for the Turbines as guard Tattersall took a hit picking up a knee injury in the process as the point was moved to the bench it was the turn of Pickle, Goodwill and Rowland to try and deliver the ball over the half way line.
With the game coming to an end the Turbines finally were able to start grabbing some defensive rebounds although a little too late Watson was able to go on a 4pt run accompanied with Kilbride getting the teams final score of the game from a quality assist from Pickles. MMU took the game 85-15 however the score line didn’t reflect the far improved organization of the Turbines especially on defence as better shot making decisions are now being made it will only be a matter of time until West Craven string more then one qtr together and become competitive through out. The Turbines take on Stockport Lapwings in what will be their first home game of the season at Marsden Heights Community College 22nd Nov 7:30pm tip.
