MMU Cheshire 90-27 West Craven Turbines Ladies
Posted on January 12th, 2013
West Craven Turbines Ladies started 2013 off with what will be their longest road trip of the season at Crewe to play the reverse fixture against MMU Cheshire who they finished off 2012 against. After a disappointing performance at home the Turbines looked to show what improvements had been made in the little practice time between the two games. With the return of star guard Ashleigh Tattersall the steps forward were evident with her aggressive style of play opening the scoring for the Turbines and furthermore going to the line for 2 three minutes later. This set the tone for the Turbines as forward Katy Watson hit 2 free throws and a strong move to the hoop demonstrating a much tougher demeanor than that of the start of the season. With a couple of good moves from Captain Steph Jackson the first qtr ended 24-12 in MMU’s favor but with West Craven already scoring more in the quarter than in the entire game last time out, things were looking positive.
The second qtr started in much the same as the first with Amelia Ward getting on the score sheet for the first time since November delivering a far more composed game than in the game prior aided by the return of Tattersall to resume point guard duties. As the half drew to a close both Watson and Tattersall through in a curve ball with foul trouble and only one player available on the bench it gave Coach Renko Ireton things to think about ending the half 49-21.
As the game continued it became evident that the lack of substitutes were having an impact on the Turbines as the vibrant cuts and ball movement seen in the first half that had been implemented since the Christmas break were wavering which was noted with a time-out mid way through the 3rd by Coach Ireton. With the game now beyond them and struggling to score the Turbines didn’t let up on their defensive effort particularly from the impressive defensive rebounding from Sarah Rowland in the second half and Pickles grabbing a game 8 rebounds for a rookie guard is impressive. As the game drew to a close the final score ended 90-27 MMU.
“In a game where we were looking for considerable improvements from the last we achieved what we set out to do on both ends of the court, a lot of positives can be taken and shows we are going in the right direction. We have a number of players almost ready to add to our limited bench over the next few weeks, with a run of four consecutive home games for the team things are looking quite exiting” Coach Ireton.
The Turbines next play league leaders Stockport Lapwings at home at Marsden Heights 25th January.
