West Craven Turbines Ladies 26-87 Slam Dunkin Divas
Posted on February 2nd, 2013
The Turbines Ladies were back in action this week after last weeks game against Stockport Lapwings was called off due to the snow hit home venue. The Turbines welcomed back to Marsden Heights the Slam Dunkin Divas from south Manchester who are always very competitive with a deep bench proving to be a very good bench mark for West Craven since playing them in pre-season. The aim of many of the Turbines remaining games is to demonstrate progress and improvement, as was the case here.
The game tipped off on a positive note with Captain Steph Jackson opening the scoring with an assist by Ashleigh Tattersall. As the first qtr progressed it became evident that the Turbines were struggling to deal with the Divas full court defence with a number of turn overs occurring resulting in a very baron spell for the Turbines this was compounded with Pickles getting in foul trouble in the first 3 minutes which would plague her for the rest of the game. The rampant Divas closed the 1st qtr with a 2-19 lead.
The 2nd qtr began with West Craven finally getting back on the scoreboard with baskets from Jackson and Katy Watson the introduction of new signing Zoë Starkie also had positive impact on the game particularly with Tattersall taking a hit going into half time 6-43.
After the half the Turbines finally began to show what they can do, spearheaded by Sarah Rowland showing a level of determination and hustle that has been starting to shine through in recent games however only now breaking out in a big way scoring 2 from the line and grabbing numerous rebounds backed up by a rebounding intensity not seen before by the Turbines with Jackson and Watson going hard to the boards. Amelia Ward showing great promise getting on the score sheet again in back to back games. The qtr was capped off with Tattersall sealing off a 19pt qtr with a strong attacking move. The Turbines were outscored by just a single point in the third finishing 19-63.
This trend continued into the final quarter with getting a score straight away follow by Jackson making a move to the hoop only to be fouled and hit both her free-throws. The Turbines final points of the night again came from Rowlands getting on break and taking a hit on the shot and brilliantly making it followed by her additional point scoring the free throw. As the later half of the quarter preceded the early fouls that were picked up and a couple of injuries slow West Craven and the Divas took hold to finish the game 26-87.
“In a game that defiantly showed how far this team has come since it was formed one year ago on 7th Feb. We showed at times we can compete with one of the best teams in the league, still with a number of new signings to make the bench in the next game things are going from strength to strength for this team. A special mention must go to Sarah Rowland who’s hard work and effort to get to the hoop and rebound the ball should not go un-noticed” Coach Renko Ireton.
